Romanian Citizenship

Since 2001, when Romanian legislation on the restitution of properties unlawfully confiscated by the communist regime was enacted, RMDT has provided legal assistance to numerous former Romanian citizens—some of whom lost their Romanian citizenship as a result of forced emigration under the totalitarian regime, while others did so due to the annexation of Romanian territories by the USSR—as well as to their descendants seeking to reacquire or acquire Romanian citizenship in order to obtain full ownership rights over restituted buildings and land.

Romania’s accession to NATO and the European Union has led to sustained economic growth and an improved standard of living, generating new opportunities for professional, entrepreneurial, and personal development for Romanian citizens, who have also become European citizens. These developments, together with the current geopolitical context, have prompted a growing number of foreign nationals, former Romanian citizens, and their descendants to seek Romanian citizenship.

The extensive experience of RMDT’s attorneys enables the firm to deliver exceptional legal services in matters concerning the acquisition or reacquisition of Romanian citizenship, beginning with a thorough case assessment to determine the applicant’s eligibility under the applicable legal framework, followed, as appropriate, by the documentation of family lineage, including the procurement of relevant records from civil registry offices and the National Archives, as well as the preparation and obtaining of all other required documentation.
